YUMA, AZ – The Lady Matadors softball team remains ranked 5th in the most recent NJCAA Top 20 National Poll following a week that saw them go 3-1 against conference rivals Eastern Arizona and Central Arizona.
Arizona Western currently sits at 28-4 overall and 22-2 in ACCAC play and remains in first place after their sweep of GateWay College on Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix.
Last week, AWC had their work cut out for them as they faced both Eastern Arizona and Central Arizona who are both hot on the Lady Mats trail in the ACCAC standings. After being run ruled in game one against EAC 8-0, AWC would then take game two in walk-off fashion by a final of 3-2. Against Central Arizona, the Lady Mats swept the Vaqueras 9-8 and 5-4 last Thursday.
“We had a great week last week and I am glad we are where we are in the poll,” said head coach Nikki Bethurum. “We knew last week would test us and we needed at least two splits, instead we go 3-1 against some stiff competition. I think that says a lot about this team.”
Eastern Arizona moved up five spots in the poll from #13 to #8 with an overall record at 25-6. Eastern and Arizona Western are still the lone representatives in the Top 20 National Poll from the ACCAC.
The Lady Matadors will look to extend their win streak to six games on Saturday when they travel to Chandler to face the Chandler-Gilbert Lady Coyotes at 12 noon. These two teams met in Yuma back in February with the Lady Mats earning a sweep with 14-2 and 7-1 victories over the Lady Coyotes.
