Thunderbirds Storm Past Matadors

YUMA, AZ – The 4th ranked Mesa Thunderbirds flexed their muscles and bats on Saturday afternoon as they claimed a sweep of Arizona Western by finals of 2-0 and 6-5.
 
With the losses, AWC falls to 22-13 overall and 7-11 in ACCAC play. With the victories, the 4th rank Mesa Thunderbirds improve to 27-7 overall and 12-6 in ACCAC action.
                
Game one was dominated by T-Bird starter John Havrid (5-0) who tossed a complete game seven innings, while allowing one hit, with two walks and four strikeouts.
 
Mesa struck early with a run in the first inning. Jordan Zimmerman reached on a bunt single and would later come around to score on an error by shortstop Irving Lopez. The second and final run of game one came around in the third inning on an error by second baseman Jesus Cerda.
 
Brandon Anderson (4-2) took the loss tossing a complete game seven innings, while allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
 
In game two, the Thunderbirds jumped out to an early cushion with three runs in the second inning and scored another run in the fourth, fifth and another in the ninth to hold on for a one run win to complete the sweep of the Matadors.
 
Mesa starter Evan Fresquez (4-0) picked up the win, tossing six plus frames while shutting out the Matadors and yielding them to just six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
 
Matadors’ starter Tanner McAnninch (3-3) took the loss, as he went five innings and allowed five runs, three earned on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.
 
The Matadors close out their three game homestand on Tuesday afternoon when they welcome in fellow ACCAC member in the Phoenix College Bears. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 12 noon at Kammann Field and as always, admission is FREE!
