AWC NEWS Headlines & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lady Matador Softball Sweeps Player of the Week Honors
Derek Diesner
Mar. 20th, 2014

YUMA, AZ – Late Wednesday evening, the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference announced that current Lady Matadors April Marquez and Nikki Kelland were named the Division One Hitter and Pitcher of the Week.

“This is a tremendous honor for both April and Nikki,” said AWC Athletic Director Jerry Smith. “Again, the team is excelling on the field and we saw that last week as the team went 6-0. April’s bat helped out immensely on the offensive end and Nikki provided the necessary help in the circle.”

As a team last week, AWC went a combined 6-0 with a conference sweep of Pima Community College, followed by victories over Odessa, Midland, Valley City State University, and Illinois Central College in the Central Arizona College Tournament.

Marquez led the offensive charge for the Lady Matadors, as she went 11-for-21 at the plate with two doubles, two homers, two stolen bases, seven RBI’s with nine runs scored.

On the mound, AWC was led by Yuma native Nikki Kelland, whom appeared in two games while tossing seven innings and recording a win and a save. Kelland struck out four batters and had an ERA of two.

The Lady Matadors will next be in action later today (Thursday) against the Central Arizona Vaqueras at 12 noon at the AWC Softball Field. Following today’s ballgame, the Lady Mats will be on the road for six straight games before returning to Yuma on April 19th to face the Phoenix College Lady Bears in a conference doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
