AWC Students Celebrate Reading
Book donations and reading event with local elementary students

Yuma, AZ (March 13, 2014) ó The KEYS Program and Club SOTE at Arizona Western College are facilitating a "Reading with TRIO Day" on March 20th from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at Rancho Viejo Head Start (930 S. Avenue C in Yuma).

Each year, Club SOTE and the KEYS Program hosts a book drive and then donates all of the books to Rancho Viejo. Each student usually gets to take at least one book home. The event is hosted to encourage reading at an early age and to introduce the young students to the idea and excitement of college.

The State of Arizona recognizes February 22nd as TRIO Day. Although they don't always have their visit to Rancho Viejo on that day, they do host a book drive during this time. This is to honor TRIO Day and all of the benefits this federal grant program has brought to Arizona over the last 50 years. TRIO is a nationwide program that works with low-income, first-generation, and students with disabilities to support them in pursuing their post-secondary degrees by offering a variety of services including tutoring, academic advising, career counseling, cultural enrichment activities, peer mentoring, and personal enrichment workshops.
