AWC NEWS Headlines & ANNOUNCEMENTS

January Student-Athlete: Jacy Pagala
Derek Diesner
Jan. 2nd, 2014

YUMA, AZ – Head women’s basketball coach Patrick Cunningham and his staff, are proud to recognize point guard Jaclanne “Jacy” Pagala as the January Student-Athlete of the Month for the women’s basketball team here at Arizona Western College.  Pagala was chosen for this award because of her excellence both in the classroom and on the basketball court.

A native of Hawaii, Pagala decided on continuing her education and growth in the game of basketball at Arizona Western College because the opportunity was available to her to get a free education while playing her favorite sport.

The sophomore guard is currently averaging a couple of points per game, but that isn’t where her main impact comes in.

“Jacy is a competitor and always plays with a high level of intensity,” said AWC head coach Patrick Cunningham. “She’s not as gifted an athlete, but is always willing to leave it all out on the floor for us. Her maturity level keeps her effort consistent which is all we ask for out of our players and her physical toughness sets an example for her teammates.”

Following her time at AWC, Pagala plans on continuing her education at a four-year school and will study to become either a firefighter or a paramedic.

“Like many of our players, Jacy is a high academic kid,” said Cunningham.  “Her school and career goals are important to her and it’s comforting to know that she will always bring forth the effort in relation to her course work.”

To this point in her career, Pagala said the best moment she has had on the court here at AWC is whenever the team makes a good play!

“Coach jumps around and gets all excited,” said Pagala.

What also gets coach excited is how Pagala views a true student-athlete.

“I think some characteristics that encompass a true student athlete are discipline, integrity, and commitment,” said Pagala.

For the month of February, we will check in with AWC head men’s basketball coach Charles Harral to see who his student-athlete of the month is. The chosen athlete will be announced on February 3nd online on the AWC Matadors athletics homepage.
