Matadors Fall To Seward In 3rd Place Game
Derek Diesner
Dec. 29th, 2013

OCEANSIDE, CA – The Arizona Western College Matadors fell for the second straight day as they dropped the third place game to Seward County (KS) 60-56 Sunday afternoon in the Third Place game of the MiroCosta Holiday Festival Tournament.

With the loss, the AWC Matadors fall to 9-6 overall and remain 5-2 in ACCAC play, while Seward County improves to 13-1 overall.

The first half was a tight back and forth battle. At the half, Seward had a slim five point lead of 32-27.

The second half, was tight once again with AWC actually outscoring the Lady Saints by a point. Seward capitalized late on a couple of costly missed shots and turnovers by the Matadors.

“This is the second disappointing loss in a row,” said AWC Head Coach Patrick Cunningham. “I am hopeful that these games better prepare us as ACCAC play continues next Saturday beginning with South Mountain.”

The Matadors shot 30% from the field for the game and were led by forward Samantha Wallace who tallied 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field to go along with four rebounds. Wallace was named to the MiroCosta Holiday Festival All-Tournament Team following the game.

Seward was led in the scoring department by Fabiana Monte who had 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting with five rebounds.

The Matadors will head back to Yuma and will take the week to prepare to return to conference action. AWC returns to the court on Saturday when they travel to the Phoenix area to face South Mountain. The women tip off at 2pm and the game can be heard live on 560 KBLU-AM with the pre-game show beginning at 1:50pm.
