Matadors Gouge The Gauchos

OCEANSIDE, CA – The Arizona Western College Matadors toppled the Saddleback Gauchos Friday afternoon 66-37 on the campus of MiroCosta College in the opening game of the 2013 Holiday Festival Tournament.
 
With the victory, the AWC Matadors improve to 9-4 overall and remain 5-2 in ACCAC play, while Saddleback College drops to 9-7 overall.
 
The first half saw both teams struggle out of the gate as each team returned to game action following the break. After about five to ten minutes of game action, the Matadors started feeling it.
 
In the first half, the Matadors shot 52% from the field compared to just 32% by Saddleback College. AWC was led by forward Samantha Wallace who led the team with 14 points after one half of play.
 
Saddleback College struggled even more in the second shooting the ball as they shot just 23% from the field on 6-of-26 shooting. The Matadors were 12-for-28 from the field which was good for 43%.
 
Samantha Wallace finished with a team best 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go along with her team best seven rebounds. Jazzmyn Oliver scored two points and notched three rebounds in her first action since the end of November.
 
The Matadors will be back at it tomorrow afternoon in day two of the MiroCosta College Holiday Festival Tournament. AWC will take on the winner of Eastern Utah/Barstow at 4:30pm (MST) in the Semi-Finals of the Holiday Festival Tournament. Both remaining AWC games can be heard live online on the Matadors Sports Network.
