AWC NEWS Headlines & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Three Matadors Sign With Division 1 Schools
Derek Diesner
Dec. 19th, 2013

YUMA, AZ – Arizona Western College Head Football Coach Tom Minnick announced Thursday that three of his players have signed on to play next season at the NCAA Division 1 level.

WR Cody Hollister (Bend, OR) has signed his letter of intent to play at the University of Arkansas next season for head coach Bret Bielema. Hollister’s twin brother TE Evan Hollister (Bend, OR) will head north to play for Wyoming under newly appointed head coach Craig Bohl and former Matador starting QB Tyler Rogers (Peoria, AZ) will play for the New Mexico State Aggies next season.

“This shows that hard work really does pay off,” said AWC Head Coach Tom Minnick. “These kids have really excelled both in the classroom and on the field. We have now placed over 45 kids in BCS schools over the last four years. We have kids all over the country and that is why Arizona Western College continues to be one of the best JUCO football programs in the nation.”

WR Cody Hollister was named to the 1st Team All-ACCAC and the 2nd Team All-WSFL following a 2013 season that saw him lead the Matadors in most receiving categories with 68 receptions for 922 yards and five touchdowns.

QB Tyler Rogers impressed in his freshman season at AWC by throwing for 1,832 yards and 14 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. Rogers also ran for 364 yards and a team best 10 touchdowns. Rogers missed two and a half games down the final stretch of the season, but was able to dress for the Matadors third straight appearance in the Fisher Automotive El Toro Bowl.

TE Evan Hollister had an outstanding year both blocking on the line and in the classroom. Hollister finished with just 10 receptions on the season for 96 yards and one touchdown.

“I’m very proud of these four athletes,” said AWC Athletics Director Jerry Smith. “This continues to show the excellence of the Arizona Western College Football program and says a lot about our head coach Tom Minnick and his staff.”

The Matadors season ended on December 7th following a loss to New Mexico Military Institute in the Fisher Automotive El Toro Bowl. AWC kicks off their 2014 campaign back at home against NMMI at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday August 23rd. Kickoff time is TBD.
