YUMA, AZ Ė Day two of this yearís Wells Fargo Classic saw close games on the womenís side of the bracket and blowouts on the menís side. The day began with Cochise topping the Anoka Ramsey women by three points, and then Phoenix routed St. Katherineís JV squad followed by a one point win for the Carl Albert State women over AWC before the AWC men took care of business against CETYS.

With the loss, the Matador women drop to 7-3 overall, while the Matador men improved to 11-2 overall with their victory over CETYS (MX). Both AWC teams will be in action on Wednesday as the teams travel to Douglas to face Cochise College.

Game one on Saturday featured the closest game we have witnessed this weekend at the Wells Fargo Classic as Cochise battled with the third ranked (division 3) Anoka Ramsey Lady Golden Rams. The game came down to the wire as Cochise won by three points 66-63. Anoka Ramsey had a chance to tie the game but threw the ball away with 4.4 seconds left in the game. Cochise was led by Te Oramae Solomon who scored 18 points of 9-of-14 shooting. Anoka Ramsey was led by Olivia Antilla with 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting.

In game two it was on to the menís side of the bracket with Phoenix College taking on St. Katherineís College JV squad. Game two was a blowout from the beginning as the Bears from Phoenix College routed the St. Katherine Firebirds 108-38. At halftime, the score was 63-15 with Phoenix shooting 67% from the field, while the Firebirds shot just 25%. The second half wasnít kind to the Firebirds either as they shot just 29% from the floor. Five Phoenix players scored in double figures led by Noah King with 14 points. St. Katherine was led by Jaylen Rose who scored 16 points.

The Matador women had their work cut out for them on Saturday night as they faced a tough opponent in Carl Albert State. The Matadors led for the bulk of the first half until the final few minutes. AWC head coach Patrick Cunningham was assessed a technical foul with under two minutes in the half giving the Vikings a chance to take the lead from the free throw line. Carl Albert capitalized and went into the half with a 28-26 lead. In the second half the score remained close as the Matadors missed a shot at the buzzer and fell by one 51-50 to Carl Albert State. The Matadors were led by Jazmin Strane with 14 points, while Bernice Satterwhite led Carl Albert State with 16 points.

In the finale of day two of the Wells Fargo Classic, the Matador men hosted CETYS Universidad. AWC was without center Ivan Uribe and guards EJ Twyman and Marquen Mitchell due to undisclosed injuries and still came away with a lopsided victory by a final of 108-36. AWC was led by Ron Lee with 30 points on 11-of-23 shooting.

The Matadors will return to action Wednesday night in Douglas, Arizona against Cochise College. The women will get things started at 5:30pm, followed by the men at 7:30pm. Both games can be heard live on 560 KBLU with our pre-game coverage getting underway at 5:20pm.
