Nov. 18th, 2013
YUMA, AZ – For the first time this season, sophomore forward/center Samantha Wallace from the Lady Matador basketball team has won the Division-One Player of the Week award.
“Samantha had a good week and picked up right where she left off last season.” said head coach Patrick Cunningham. “We have bigger fish to fry this season, but this is a nice early award for our team.”
Wallace led the Lady Matadors by averaging 23 points per game last week in wins over Chandler-Gilbert and Scottsdale. Along with her 23 points per game, Wallace also averaged 16 rebounds a game, including a 20 rebound performance against Chandler-Gilbert.
“It’s always exciting when our student athletes are recognized by the conference.” said Arizona Western College Athletics Director Jerry Smith.
Last week, the Lady Matadors defeated Chandler-Gilbert by a final of 95-90 in overtime at home on Veterans Day. AWC then went on the road and defeated Scottsdale 69-42 to remain undefeated at 2-0 in conference play.
Wallace and her teammates will have yet another busy week as they have a pair of ACCAC games coming up. First up for the Lady Mats is another road test against the Glendale Gauchos on Wednesday at 5:30pm. Following Wednesday’s game, the Lady Mats will then welcome their rivals Eastern Arizona to Yuma on Saturday night with the opening tip scheduled for 5:30pm.
