Lady Matadors Earn Numerous Postseason Accolades
Derek Diesner
Nov. 3rd, 2013

YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors closed out their regular season Friday night with a straight sets sweep of Phoenix College and now have continued their dominance with numerous awards throughout the ACCAC and Region 1.

On Saturday, the Lady Matadors were honored by placing two players on the First Team All ACCAC conference team, two players on the All-Region 1 Division 1 team, and the best honor of all; Maria del mar Guzman Franco winning the Player of the Year Award in the ACCAC.

The accolades are well warranted and greatly appreciated by the Lady Matador volleyball team, but in the end the team hopes that everything leads them to Casper, Wyoming, where the National Tournament will be held this year.

“Our goal from day one was to make it to Casper for Nationals,” said head coach Jason Smith. “I am very proud of what Maria, Abbie, and this entire team have accomplished this year. It’s also an amazing feat that Maria accomplished by winning the Player of the Year award because she deserved it and we were all pulling for her.”

Up next for the Lady Matadors is the Region 1 Finals game which will be played this Wednesday at 7pm inside of “The House” in Yuma on the campus of Arizona Western College. The Lady Matadors will host Central Arizona College, who they are 2-1 against this season. The one loss came last Wednesday night at home by a final of 3-2.
