Matadors Rock NMMI For Homecoming Win
Derek Diesner
Oct. 12th, 2013

YUMA, AZ The #11 Arizona Western College Matadors came out on the attack and never let up as they defeated the #20 New Mexico Military Institute Broncos by a final of 47-27 on Homecoming at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma.
With the victory, the 11th ranked AWC Matadors improve to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in Western States Football League play. With the loss, the NMMI Broncos fall to 5-3 on the season and 4-3 in WSFL play.
The scoreboard was lit and ready for a high scoring affair between the Matadors and the Broncos, as the two WSFL teams combined for 74 points and close to 900 yards of offense Saturday evening.
The Matadors got on the board first with a Marcus Horne two yard touchdown run just two minutes into the game to give AWC an early 7-0 advantage.
The two teams would continue to exchange touchdowns for the rest of the first half, as the teams headed to the lockerooms being separated by just a touchdown.
AWC opened the second half with a Tyler Rogers 32 yard touchdown run just a minute into the half and would never look back. The Matadors outscored the Broncos 20-7 in the second half, on their way to their seventh win of the season while locking up a top two seed in the WSFL playoffs.
Up next for the Matadors is the regular season finale, as Arizona Western College hits the road to face the Snow College Badgers in Ephraim, Utah next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12pm and you can catch the game on 560 KBLU-AM; the flagship home for Arizona Western College athletics or online by visiting the Matadors Athletic homepage. Our pregame coverage will get underway at 11:50am.
