Matadors Fall In Heartbreaking Fashion
Oct. 12th, 2013
YUMA, AZ – The 19th ranked Arizona Western College Men’s Soccer team lost Saturday afternoon by a final of 2-1 to South Mountain Community College at the AWC Soccer Field on Homecoming.
With the loss, the Matadors fall to 12-5-1 overall and 11-5-1 in ACCAC play. With the victory, South Mountain Community College improves to 4-12 overall and 4-11 in ACCAC play.
In a fast paced game, the first half came and went without any scoring.
As the second half got underway, there still wasn’t a goal until 11 minutes in, when Angel Fernandez found the back of the net to give AWC a 1-0 lead at the 56 minute mark.
Following Fernandez’s goal, South Mountain would strike for a goal of their own by Ruben Fernandez just 13 minutes after Angel Fernandez’s goal.
With the score tied at one and precious time ticking away, South Mountain found a hole in the Matador defense and scored off the foot of Carlos Zavala to give them the lead for good at 2-1. Zavala’s goal came with about 15 minutes left in the game and was assisted by Jesus Corvales.
“Our unwillingness to make the correct tactical decisions cost us this game. We allowed just two goals, but we only scored one. This team seems to think they will always score and they were unable to do so tonight and because of that, we wound up with a loss,” said head coach Kenny Dale.
The AWC men will next be in action on Thursday at 3:30PM when the Matadors hit the road to take on Paradise Valley. The women will get things started at 1pm followed by the men at 3:30pm.
