YUMA, ARIZONA – The top 20 football rankings were released Tuesday by the NJCAA and Arizona Western College moved up one spot to 11.

In the past three weeks, the Matadors have moved up eight spots in the NJCAA Top 20 National Poll. This week, AWC will be tested as they play one of their toughest opponents yet, in the 17 ranked Mesa Thunderbirds (4-1).

AWC earned 61 points in the poll this week, two points ahead of Butler Community College in Kansas who fell from fourth all the way to 12.

Central Lakes College in Brainerd is the lone team to drop from the top 20, however they are still receiving votes along with three other schools. Rochester Community and Technical College is the lone newcomer to the polls this week after being unranked last week coming in at 19.

Fellow WSFL members Scottsdale and Mesa remained in the polls once again this week. The Fighting Artichokes come in at 13 this week, up three spots from 16 last week. Scottsdale is currently just four points behind the Matadors. The Mesa Thunderbirds, AWC’s opponent this week comes in at 17 this week, up two spots from last week’s poll.

For the second straight week, New Mexico Military Institute are receiving votes but still is not in the top 20 with their overall record sitting at 4-1.

Up next for the Matadors is what could be their toughest test yet, as they travel north to Mesa to face the Thunderbirds. Both teams enter Saturday’s showdown tied atop the WSFL standings at 4-1. The game can be heard on 560 KBLU-AM, the flagship home for Arizona Western College.
