Aaseem Dixon Pursues Dream At NAU
Sep. 18th, 2013
YUMA, ARIZONA – Earlier this offseason, former AWC sophomore basketball guard Aaseem Dixon decided to continue his dream of playing basketball at the highest level by signing a letter of intent to play for Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.
“It came down to a few schools,” said Dixon. “There were a few schools out east that were recruiting me, but in the end I wanted to stay closer to home so that my family could come and watch me.”
Dixon started in all 31 games last season for the Matadors, while averaging 10.5 points a game (third highest on team), three assists and three rebounds a game.
“This NAU program is rebuilding right now, but I like the direction (head) coach (Jack) Murphy is taking,” said Dixon.
Northern Arizona went just 11-21 last season and 8-12 in conference play.
“Things are going great, it’s a great town (Flagstaff) to be in and it’s a new arena.”
As with all big life decisions, a lot of thought went into Dixon’s decision.
“It was a tough decision. But like I said earlier, being close to home helped a lot. I also wanted to major in Criminal Justice, and by coming here to NAU I am able to pursue that degree,” said Dixon.
From a Matador now to a Lumberjack, Dixon will always have a home in Yuma, but it’s on to bigger and brighter pastures for the young guard who help lead this AWC team last season. NAU kicks-off their season November 9 against the University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners.
The AWC Matadors men’s basketball team starts their 2013-2014 regular season schedule on November 1 as they travel to Sells for a classic where they will face Salt Lake City in their opener. The Matadors open the home portion of their schedule on Thursday November 7 against Snow College in the opener of the 2013 Desert Classic inside of “The House.”
