Matador Athletics Announces 9th Annual Day of Champions

Yuma, AZ (August 13, 2013) — This Friday, while most college students are finalizing their preparation for the school year, or sleeping in for one last day, 300 student athletes and staff from AWC will be giving back to the community.
The 9th Annual Day of Champions will bring helping hands to community non-profits in Yuma, El Centro, San Luis, Somerton and Wellton for any number of tasks to help improve the lives of local residents. Jobs range from yard work to painting to moving furniture, and everything in between.

“This is a great opportunity to get our students engaged with their community. Service learning is something we want all of our students to experience during their time at Arizona Western,” said AWC Athletic Director Jerry Smith.

Joining the Matadors will be staff members from the local WalMarts and Sam’s Club, who have supported the effort for years.

After the chores are done, the students and other participants are treated to a noon feast at Outback Steakhouse, another long-time sponsor of Day of Champions.
