Two AWC Students to Study Abroad, Need Help Raising Funds

Yuma, Arizona (May 2, 2013) — Two hard-working Arizona Western College students will have the opportunity to learn about another country and culture during their upcoming travels to Spain to study Spanish, but they need help raising funds for their portion of the cost of their respective trips.

Dushon Smith, a participant of the Student Support Services (KEYS) Program, was selected as one of 20 students who are participants in a TRIO Student Support Services and/or Ronald E. McNair Program from across the country to participate in the Council of Opportunity in Education’s Keith Sherin International Global Leadership Program. He will travel May 29 through June 29, 2013, to Salemenca, Spain. He is the second student from the SSS/KEYS program to be selected for this program.

Maria Oros, also an SSS/KEYS Program participant, was selected to participate in the Culture Experience Abroad Program. She was initially scheduled to travel to Spain in June, but will now study abroad during the Spring 2014 semester.

The students are fundraising to raise their portion of the cost for their trips, but additional help is needed from the AWC and Yuma community. Donations and support at fundraising efforts will be gratefully accepted. Smith must raise $2500, and the funds must be submitted by May 15, 2013. Anyone who is interested in making a donation for Smith and/or Oros may contact the AWC SSS/KEYS Program at 928-344-7761.

For more information, please contact Michelle Thomas, Program Director of the SSS/KEYS Program at AWC, at michelle.Thomas@azwestern.edu, 928-344-7763. Carlos Ramos, Outreach Coordinator of the SSS/KEYS Program at AWC, can also provide information. He can be reached at carlos.ramos@azwestern.edu, or 928-344-7761.
