Whitt earns NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American honors

Two-year starter at guard for Matadors earns national acclaim for first time

Yuma, Arizona – April 9, 2013 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that AWC Men’s Basketball player Marvin Whitt has been named as an NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Honorable Mention All-American. The announcement comes just five weeks after Whitt led the Matadors to their third straight appearance in the Region I Championship Game. Whitt is one of just four members of ACCAC Men’s Basketball teams to earn NJCAA All-American status this season.

“Run the point.” “Be the team’s main perimeter shooter.” “Lead the transition.” While all of these terms were things that Whitt had as part of his ever-evolving job description during his sophomore campaign, the more apropos term for describing what Whitt did in 2012-13 was “lead the team”. The Birmingham, Alabama, native waited for the chance to do just that after spending his freshman campaign splitting time at both the point guard and shooting guard spots and deferring much of the main leadership roles to others. As a sophomore, he showed his leadership not just by what was on the stat sheet but also doing whatever was expected of him-even when that changed midway through the season when after spending the first two months of the season playing the point guard spot, Whitt shifted back to the off-guard spot that he inhabited much of his freshman year. It didn’t hinder Whitt from continuing to improve and become one of the top guards in the conference-and now, the nation. No matter where he was, though, Whitt’s game continued to improve with each game in 2012-13. Even in a balanced Matador offense, Whitt was still the team’s top dog, leading them in scoring in 11 of their 31 games, and leading them overall with a 15.3 points-per-game average. Whitt also led the team in assists with 3.2 per contest, and his quick hands led to a team-leading 1.5 steals-per-game average. The 5’10” sophomore also wasn’t afraid to mix it up inside, averaging 5.4 rebounds per game. Whitt also finished 2nd on the team in free throw shooting with a percentage of 74.8%. Whitt earned 1st Team All-ACCAC & 1st Team All-Region I honors at the conclusion of the regular season.

After working his way up the athletic & academic ladders (a rising 2.9 cumulative grade point average after the 2012 fall semester) for the past two years at AWC, Whitt now sets his sights on finding a four-year college home in the very near future, and his head coach thinks Whitt will have several great choices to choose from. "Marvin has had great success at Arizona Western College. He is the best scoring guard I have had the opportunity to coach at AWC,” remarked AWC Men’s Head Basketball Coach Charles Harral. “We look for even greater achievements for him next year. He is a great young man, and has a great future ahead of him at the four-year level."
