Student-led National Event Spotlights Anti-LGTB Abuse

Yuma, AZ- (March 25, 2013)— The Arizona Western College Gay Straight Alliance for Equality club (GSA4=) and Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) invites students, faculty and staff to participate in AWC’s observance of the Day of Silence on Thursday, April 18, 2013. The silence will be broken at 4 p.m. in the grassy area between the 3C and AS buildings on the college’s main campus.

Participants with have the opportunity to take a vow of silence for the day. Students will gather with a paper chain made from the supporters’ and allies’ names written on a strip of paper. Then at 4 p.m. the chain and the silence will be broken. Students will have the opportunity to discuss their experiences, and student speakers will have the chance to share ways to promote peace and acceptance. Additionally, MVP and GSA4= will discuss their purpose and meeting times.

The Day of Silence is a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take a vow of silence in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior by illustrating the silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT. For more information about the national movement, visit GLSEN.ORG.

For more information about the event, please contact Melissa Behunin, professor of Family Studies and Psychology at AWC, at melissa.behunin@azwestern.edu, or Abby Zamorano, GSA4= president, at az35@toro.azwestern.edu.
