Scholarship Season is Here, Free Essay Workshops Offer Help
Yuma, AZ (February 13, 2013) --- Scholarship Season at AWC has arrived, and all students and prospective students are encouraged to apply for as many as possible.
Applications will be accepted beginning Friday, February 15, and the deadline to submit them is Thursday, March 21.
Students may pick up a list of scholarships at the AWC Foundation office on the 2nd floor of the 3C Building on Main Campus, 2020 South Avenue 8E. Or they may view the scholarship list online by visiting www.foundation.azwestern.edu and clicking on the Scholarship tab to find types and names of scholarships, criteria for each and amounts to be awarded. Students can also click on the Application tab, fill out the application, print it, and then take it to the Foundation office for submission.
Most of the scholarships awarded at AWC require the writing of an essay, which can seem daunting to some students. To assist them, free Scholarship Essay Workshops will be held Wednesday, February 20 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and Monday, March 4 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the AWC Writing Center in room SC 206 on main campus. Students may sign up at the Writing Center, or by calling (928) 317-6171. The workshops will also be broadcast to La Paz and San Luis satellite campuses. Students who attend the workshops may be referred to writing tutors who can offer further assistance.
AWC Scholarship Specialist Sonnet Nelson also offers students the following tips, which focus on the three Ss in “success.”
1. Scout - Research the many scholarship opportunities and find the best fit for your needs.
2. Scrutinize - Read carefully and know what is required for the scholarships and then follow directions.
3. Submit - Turn in the application before the deadline. Apply early, often and to many scholarships. You can win multiple scholarships, so don’t overlook the smaller ones; every dollar adds up.
“I encourage everyone who is going to be an AWC student in the upcoming fall academic year to apply for a scholarship,” she says.
