Donnelly, Luna Receive Endowed Faculty Achievement Awards

Yuma, AZ (January 28, 2013) — Scott Donnelly, AWC Professor of Chemistry/Director of Center for Teaching Effectiveness, and Angel Luna, AWC Professor of Fine Arts, have been named recipients of the Endowed Faculty Achievement Awards.

The purpose of this award is to recognize faculty for their outstanding contributions to their profession, their college, their students, and their community. It is based upon evidence of excellence in supporting and motivating students, advancing AWC through career, participation on committees, student activities, partnerships, and community outreach.

Donnelly has “preached” the gospel of chemistry at AWC with missionary zeal for nearly two decades, according to his nomination letter. “His contributions to the academic mission of the college have gone beyond his obligatory contractual obligations and service on college committees and task forces. He has written and been awarded a number of National Science Foundation grants that resulted in the procurement of high-end analytical laboratory instrumentation, served two years as the sole national representative for community college chemistry faculty on an American Chemical Society chemical education task force, and has routinely given invited presentations at national chemistry conferences,” it further states. But perhaps most importantly, he “…inspires his students to develop and educate our own community through their own work.”

Luna also has a great commitment to student success at AWC, according to his nomination letter. Not only has he brought a sculpting class back into the AWC curriculum, but he has also been instrumental in getting art classes accredited for transfer to upper level classes. “By doing this, he has given many students the inspiration to achieve higher learning and to pursue their dreams,” the letter states. As the college’s Art Club Advisor, he has involved students in the Children’s Festival of the Art, he has participated himself in the North End Art Walk and is a founding member and former manager of the North End Co-op. He has worked at AWC since 2004, and has served as Lead Faculty for Fine Art, Music, and Theater since 2010. He has exhibited his artwork, given lectures and served on academic panels in many states.

“I can’t think of two people who deserve this award more than Angel Luna and Scott Donnelly,” says Christina Hawkey, Executive Director of the AWC Foundation. “Both Angel and Scott are true champions for education. They have made a tremendous impact on our students, our College and our community. I am proud to call them my colleagues and my friends.”

There were two awards available this year, each for $2000, which are supported by two separate endowed funds: the Shadle/Edgecombe Endowed Fund, established by Steve and Bobbie Shadle in recognition of Bobbie’s parents and their dedication to higher education; and the Frances Morris Endowed Fund, established in honor of Frances Morris, a board member of AWC for 28 years who was a strong proponent of education and passionately supported the college in many ways.
