Bibbs, Savage earn spots on NJCAA All-American Football teams
Jim Howell
Dec. 13th, 2012

Sophomore tight end, left guard both named to 2nd Team

Yuma, Arizona – December 13, 2012 – Arizona Western College is proud to announce that two members of the AWC Football team have been named to the NJCAA All-American list. A pair of sophomores, tight end Emmanuel Bibbs and offensive lineman Dionte (dee-ONN-tay) Savage were named to the 2nd Team All-American team. The Matadors have now placed 13 student-athletes on the prestigious list in the last 4 years-the most to be named in that short a span in Matador Football history. The announcements come just 12 days after the two led the Matadors to their first bowl victory in 40 years at the 2012 El Toro Bowl-presented by Alexander Automotive Group-at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma on December 1st.

Emmanuel Bibbs is a definite example of waiting for your chance to shine, and then taking advantage of it. After arriving at AWC for his freshman campaign in the summer of 2011, he spent his freshman campaign as the backup to last year’s starting tight end, Darwin Rogers. While Rogers got the majority of the snaps, Bibbs came in and impressed during double tight-end sets, and when he had the chance to reel in a catch, he did it, including catching a 6-yard TD pass in his first reception as a Matador, and also snatching three catches for 19 yards in the NJCAA National Championship Game against East Mississippi in the 2011 El Toro Bowl. When Rogers moved on to Arizona State University, Bibbs saw his chance to become a major portion of the Matadors’ aerial attack this season, and accomplished that goal in top fashion. He continued to be a force in the Matadors’ blocking scheme that would spring DaSean Martin, J.C. Baker and Tanner McEvoy loose for a combined 1750 rushing yards. But it’s his ability to catch passes and get them into the end zone that is what will stick with Matador fans about Bibbs, since the Chicago, Illinois native reeled in 22 catches for 230 receiving yards in 2012, and scored 6 touchdowns, saving the best for last with a catch in the 2012 El Toro Bowl where he caught at the Nassau 35-yard line, and weaved through half the Lions’ defense for a highlight-reel touchdown that wound up giving the Matadors the lead for good in their 42-37 victory.

Three running backs with 225 rushing yards or more on the same team… two of them with over 450 yards on the ground… a quarterback who averages 100 rushing yards per game in your last 3 regular season games and winds up with nearly 500 yards rushing himself in 2012. These are the benchmarks of Matadors’ left guard Dionte Savage, who was a solid and powerful as any lineman this season. He showed little rust when he returned to the Matador camp this past August after starting 5 games for the Matadors in 2010 at right tackle, then taking a year away from school. Savage was pegged to start at left tackle from basically the first tackling drill of the preseason this year, stayed there through the entire 10-game schedule, and was one of the top reasons why the Matadors rushed for over 2000 yards as a team.
