AWC Welding, Culinary Arts Students Place in 2012 SkillsUSA National Championships
Yuma, AZ (July 5, 2012) — Several AWC students placed in the 2012 SkillsUSA National Championships in Kansas City during the last week of June.
The AWC Institute of Welding Technology SkillsUSA Student Chapter returned June 28th from the SkillsUSA National Skills and Leadership Conference having worked the better part of the week competing in the Welding Fabrication Team event, where they placed 12th in the nation. Students completed a six-hour welding fabrication event, during which they were judged on their ability to complete a pre-engineered designed project demonstrating accuracy and skill in four welding processes. The students also completed a two-hour written welding knowledge exam and an oral presentation.
The fabrication team was comprised of Justin Skellett and Jorge Padilla (alternate) from Yuma, Trisha Haswood from Window Rock, Arizona, and John Stratz from Clarkdale, Arizona.
In the Prepared Speech event, AWC Welding student Omar Macias scored 88.97, placing 8th in the nation in the college postsecondary level. He was judged on his effectiveness as a speaker and on his ability to engage an audience during the timed competition.
In the Extemporaneous Speaking event, AWC Welding student Adrian Castillo placed 15th in the nation. He was given a five-minute window to prepare a speech on an assigned topic and then delivered the speech for a set amount of time.
In the Culinary Arts competition, AWC Culinary Arts student Sarah Jimenez placed 26th in the nation in the college postsecondary level. During the all-day cooking event, she received a list of ingredients from which she had to prepare a menu and then cook, plate and present a full-course meal.
