AWC NEWS Headlines & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Matadors’ 2012 soccer schedule released
Jim Howell
Jun. 11th, 2012

2011 Region I Semifinalists commence 21-match schedule August 23rd against Chandler-Gilbert

Yuma, Arizona – June 11, 2012 -- Arizona Western College has announced that the 2012 AWC Soccer schedule has been released. The Matadors-who made their fourth straight appearance in the Region I Playoffs last October-will host eleven Matador home games and travel to ten road contests as part of the 21-game regular season schedule. The schedule was released just seven weeks before the start of preseason soccer camp.

The Matadors will commence their regular season in the city that will host their first five road contests: Phoenix. The Matadors start off the season with a two-game road trip to face two fellow 2011 playoff teams, Chandler-Gilbert & Glendale, on August 23rd and 25th, respectively. They’ll kick off the home side of their schedule against the team that they faced the last time they were on a soccer field in 2011: defending Region I Champion Pima Community College on Tuesday, August 28th. They’ll then commence a seven-game home schedule in the month of September with an ACCAC clash against Gateway Community College on Saturday night, September 1st. Other highlighted home soccer matches in September include against Scottsdale (September 13th), South Mountain (September 17th), Chandler-Gilbert (September 25th) and Glendale (September 27th). They’ll also play their lone non-conference matchup of the 2012 season at home against San Diego Mesa College from California on Friday afternoon, September 7th at a special 5PM starting time. The road side of the Matadors’ schedule for September is a tough one, since among their five road matches during that stretch are showdowns against three of the top four seeds in last year’s Region I Playoffs: Phoenix College on September 11th; perennial powerhouse Yavapai on September 20th in Prescott and then the return matchup against Pima in Tucson on September 29th. Other September road matchups include Paradise Valley (September 4th) and Mesa (September 15th).

A pair of two-game homestands highlight the Matadors’ October schedule as they’ll host Paradise Valley and Phoenix College on October 4th & 9th, respectively; then will conclude the home side of their schedule with Mesa in a special 7PM kickoff on October 13th and a huge Sophomore Night showdown on Thursday night, October 18th against Yavapai. The Matadors will head out on the road just three times in October, facing off against Gateway on October 2nd, Scottsdale on October 11th, then finishing out the 2012 regular season in Phoenix for a noon kickoff at South Mountain Community College on Saturday, October 20th.

All Matador Soccer home matches (except the special times listed above) will kick off at 6PM at the AWC Soccer Field (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma), and admission to all regular season home soccer games is FREE. The Matadors will shoot for their 7th appearance in the last 8 years in the Region I Playoffs, which will begin on Tuesday night, October 23rd.
