Three Reasons to Celebrate at AWC: Capitol Christmas Tree, New President Reception, New Building Tours
Tree chosen from White Mountains Tours the state
Yuma, Arizona (November 4, 2009) – Arizona Western College is proud to announce the historic opportunity to host the Christmas tree that was selected to stand at the U.S. Capitol lawn this holiday season. The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree was selected on July 19th by the Superintendent of U.S. Capitol Grounds, Ted Bechtol, from the Arizona White Mountains. As part of the selection process the tree will be touring the state, making stops in various communities.
The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will be in Yuma at the Arizona Western College parking lot near the College Community Center (3C). The reception will be on Sunday, November 15th from 3:30 to 6:00pm. During the reception Dr. Marc Nigliazzo will also be recognized as the newest AWC President.
The community is invited to celebrate this piece of history as it travels through the state. During the reception the community will have the opportunity to view the tree and meet AWC’s new president, Dr. Marc Nigliazzo. In addition, AWC will offer hot cider, live seasonal music, and tours of the new taxpayer supported facilities such as the Agriculture & Science complex, College Community Center (3C), Dr. Kathryn Watson Child Development Learning Lab, and the Dr. James R. Carruthers Research & Education Building (NAU).
The winning tree is a blue spruce, 85 feet tall and was located in the White Mountains of Arizona on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. This will be the first time Arizona has provided the Capitol Christmas Tree.
Dr. Nigliazzo has held various leadership positions, including President of Temple College (1995 - 2008) and President of Galveston College (1991 - 1995). Dr. Nigliazzo has also served in several faculty appointments in Colorado, Idaho, and Texas. Most recently, he served as University of New Mexico’s Vice President for Rio Rancho Operations and Branch Academic Affairs, including overseeing the university’s first building at the Rio Rancho City Center.
