AWC NEWS Headlines & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Matador Men’s & Women’s Basketball exhibition matchup cancelled

Sunday’s scheduled doubleheader at ‘The House’ called off by Mexico opponent

Yuma, Arizona – October 30, 2009 – Arizona Western College has announced that the scheduled men’s-women’s exhibition basketball doubleheader scheduled for this Sunday, November 1st, has been cancelled. Matador Athletics officials were notified late this week by officials from the scheduled opponent, Combinado Conadeip from Mexico, that the men’s and women’s teams’ proposed trip to the United States-which would see the school’s men’s and women’s basketball teams play several 2-year and 4-year colleges in the southwestern U.S.-wouldn’t be happening after all, thereby cancelling the scheduled 2PM and 4PM games this Sunday at ‘The House’.

No makeup date has been announced. The cancellation means the official 2009-10 regular season openers for the both the AWC Matadors’ Men’s & Women’s Basketball teams will happen a week from today, Friday, November 6th. The women will begin their regular season in the same place that they’ve commenced each of the last three seasons: Cedar City, Utah, site of the Southern Utah Tournament. The Lady Mats will open up tournament play Friday morning at 11:30AM against Salt Lake Community College before finishing up their part of the tournament 24 hours later in a Saturday matinee against the College of Eastern Utah.

Meanwhile, the men’s Matadors will open up their 2009-10 campaign at the friendly confines of ‘The House’-AWC’s home gymnasium on the main campus in Yuma-against the College of the Desert from Palm Desert, California. Tipoff for the single game will be Friday, November 6th at 7:30PM. Admission prices are as follows: $5 admission for adults, $3 for military personnel (with valid military ID), seniors and students ages 12-17, and free for AWC students, NAU-Yuma students, Matador Athletic Association members and kids under the age of 12.
