Membership

According to the PTK website, more than 75,000 students each year, with an average age of new members at 29, ranging from 18 to 80, accept membership in Phi Theta Kappa. To be eligible for membership a student must:

1. Complete a minimum of twelve hours of associate degree course work, with part-time or full time status.
2. Earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment at Arizona Western College, and maintain a 3.50 GPA. A GPA below 3.50 will place the student on a one semester probation, with the opportunity to improve their academic standing. Part-time and full-time students at Arizona Western College are eligible for membership through the Sigma Beta chapter.

Students pay a one-time membership fee of $65, payable in the form of a money order to "PTK" due at the time of application, or through the AWC business office.

Sigma Beta All- USA Scholars

AWC has had considerable success in placing AWC students among the top in both the Arizona competition as well as on the National Team.

In 2008-09, Jennifer Gilbert placed into the All-Arizona Team 1. Lam Trinh placed into the All-Arizona Team 2.

In 2007-08, Eva Olvera placed on the All-Arizona First Team. Virginia Brindley placed on the All-Arizona Second Team. Both have served as PTK chapter presidents at AWC.

In 2006-07, both the AWC nominees- Bertha Quintero and Maricela Hernandez- place on the All-Arizona First Team.

In 2005-06, Nancy Hernandez recieved the top honor- membership on the All- USA First Team. Lisa Newton was on the Arizona Second Team.

In 2004-05, Melissa Magin and Katrina Flores were selected, placing on the second and third teams, respectively. They recieved both monetary scholarships and tuition waivers worth 4 semesters at ASU, U of A, and NAU, and cash awards.

In 2003-04, Erica Martinez and Abigail Dambeck were selected, placing on the first and third teams, respectively.

In 2002-03, Rene Pack and Beth Freeman both ranked among the top students in the state, placing on the third team. They received both monetary scholarships as well as tuition waivers worth 4 semesters at ASU, U of A, or NAU.

In 2001-02, Verree Laughlin and Diana Villarreal both placed in the top team (10) of ALL USA nominees in the State! In the 00/01 school year, Patricia King made the first team for the State of Arizona (top 10) and Jennifer Haug made the third team (top 30), earning cash scholarships in addition to tuition and fee scholarships. Patricia King will use her tuition and fee scholarship at Arizona State University and Jennifer Haug will return to AWC to continue on to NAU-Yuma.

In the 1998-99 school year, Richard Montague made the third team for the State of Arizona (top 30) and Ismael Ramirez made the first team (top 10), both earning four semesters of tuition and fee scholarship at any Arizona university. Richard transferred to Cornell, and Ismael is headed to Arizona State University.

During the 1998-99 school year, Sarah Adams from AWC placed in the lst All-Arizona team and went on and placed in the 2nd All America USA team at the national level. Sarah received a tuition and fees scholarship to attend one of the three State public universities and now is enrolled at NAU in Flagstaff. In previous years, AWC has had two students on the lst All American USA team. Susie Grandin (AWC 1997) was awarded a scholarship to Notre Dame, and Leigh Baltzer (AWC 1998 and I-8 billboard fame) was awarded a tuition waiver to any Arizona university.
