Teaching with electrons
In 1984 the song Eyes Without a Face by the English rocker Billy Idol reached #4 on the Billboard Charts. Teaching online at times can seem like a version of the title of Idol's song. Teaching online can be very different from teaching in a traditional classroom. As it is commonly structured faculty who teach online must help students learn without the benefit of human face-to-face interaction and live discussion. Online teaching does not give a faculty the advantage of reading cues from a student's body language or voice inflection. Although teaching online certainly isn’t for everyone, nevertheless many faculty enjoy the inherent challenges of virtual instruction. The links below provide a general synopsis of what online teaching is and the tools currently available to augment one's online course.
