Academy for Assessment of Student Learning
Arizona Western College has been accepted to the Higher Learning Commission’s Academy for the Assessment of Student Learning which will occur 2009 through 2012. AWC will be part of the February 2009 Cohort Group along with colleges and universities from across the region. The Academy will begin with a three-day Academy Roundtable on February 18, 2009. Acceptance into the Academy is a competitive process with only two cohorts of eighteen institutions admitted to the Academy in 2008-2009.

July 2009 Team Poster
On July 22-24, 2009, a second group of faculty and staff attended the HLC "Making a Differnece in Student Learning: Assessment as a Core Strategy," in Lisle, IL. Our mentor was Robert "Bob" Mundhenk and the AWC team consisted of Nancy Blitz, Professor of English as a Second Language/Director of CTE; Fred Croxen, Professor of Geology; Stephen Moore, Professor of English and Bertha M. Avila, Director of Assessment and Program Review. The link above provides the final team poster project presented to Mentor/Teams. This project has already been presented to the Vice President of Learning Services, Deans and Associate Deans in Learning Services with further implementation to occur during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Best Practices Instrument Pool
Learning Outcomes Methodology Request
On Saturday, January 10, 2009, during the Spring 2009 Faculty Meeting, faculty were asked to participate in an activity to collect best practices of methods used to target student learning outcomes. This activity was to find useful methods that may also be helpful to other faculty members. In collecting all the information of this project, the Office of Assessment and Program Review will be following up with departments who have requested and/or need assistance in ways to improve student outcomes. Two separate forms were distributed to faculty which were later collected during the following two weeks. All responses gathered can be seen above (link).

All teams were asked to focus on what mattered most and to define strategies that will meet goals and needs. Our mentor was Neil Pagano and the AWC team consisted of Judy Watkinson, Professor of Early Childhood Education; Charlie Balch, Professor of CIS; Bertha M. Avila, Director of Assessment and Program Review; Mat Anderson, Associate Dean for Business and Liberal Arts; and Dr. Joann Linville, Interim Vice President for Learning Services. August 7, 2008 Culture Camp
As part of Title V Objectives, the Office of Diversity annually schedules a culture camp inviting faculty to participate in a diversity infusion program. This program is geared to teach faculty ways in which to incorporate diversity into the curriculum. The APR Office presented to the group and made available a lesson plan template to demonstrate how diversity was infused in teh class. Faculty had an option to use their existing lesson plans or use the template.

Members of the LEAP Committee placed an informational and activity booth during faculty in-service. Faculty were ask the following question: "How do the courses I teach or my discipline contribute to the 4 general education student learning outcomes?"

Saturday Faculty Meetings, January 12, 2008
In January 12, 2008, during the Saturday Faculty Meetings, a division-wide assessment activity occurred to survey the use of embedded assessment in the classes at AWC. This data represents faculty responses as to the degree they infused AWC institutional educational goals in their classes broken out by areas.
