Honors Program Admission Requirements

High school applicants shall meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Ranked within the top ten per cent (10%) of graduating class

  • American College Test (ACT) score of at least 24, or Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score of at least 1575 (or 1050 without the Written test)

  • An appropriate qualifying score on the AWC Placement Exams: eligibility for ENG 101 (or appropriate reading score) and MAT 121

Continuing AWC student applicants must:

  • Complete at least 12 college credit hours, in courses 100-level or above, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS & CURRENT AWC STUDENTS:  Use the application materials below to apply for the Honors Program.

Deadline for applying to the Honors Program:  None.  There is no deadline; you may apply to the Honors Program any time, year-round, and enroll in Honors classes the following semester.   

Honors Scholarships: For the past few years there have been 25+ Honors Scholarships that cover full tuition, books, and food, for two semesters, or approximately $4400 per year.  Students receiving the scholarship for the fall semester must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at the end of fall to continue receiving the scholarship for the spring.  The deadline for the 2016-17 scholarships has passed (April 5, 2016). 

All applicants must submit the following application components:

  • Honors Program Application (fillable): includes Personal Information Sheet, 1 short Biographical essay, and 1 longer essay on Academic and Professional Goals. Write, revise, and edit your essays in advance. The Honors Council considers all aspects of your answers - what you say (content), but also how you say it (style).  Your essays will be scored lower for vague language and grammatical errors.  Note: Please do not hand-write the application.  Instead, click "Open With Different Viewer" (OR click the arrow in the upper right-hand corner), open with Adobe Reader, and complete that fillable application.  To save, change filename to include your last name and first name.  EX: DoeJohn_HonorsApplication.  Email your saved application to:    You do not need to complete the electronic signature; just write a note in the body of your email to confirm your name.
  • 2 Academic Recommendations: Send this link (or, open, save, and send this Excel spreadsheet) to two faculty members, counselors, or administrators at a school you have recently attended, and who are familiar with your academic/scholarly abilities and your good character.  Assure them that it will only take them 3-4 minutes to complete the form.  They must complete, save, and email the form to: from their school email address.
  • AWC Placement Test scores OR ACT or SAT scores OR Unofficial High School and/or College Transcript (as applicable): Attach a PDF or PNG file of your unofficial transcript or scores to the email in which you send your application.  [You can save a screen from WebAdvisor as a PNG file by taking the following steps: Log into WebAdvisor -> Test Summary OR Transcript -> Click the "Start" icon on the bottom left of your screen -> Search "snipping tool" -> Click and drag the cursor across the screen so that it captures the AWC WebAdvisor logo, test scores, and date -> Save as a .PNG file and attach to your email.] 

Exceptions to the application requirements may be allowed with the expressed permission of the Honors Director, subject to approval by the Honors Council. In rare circumstances, it is within the purview of the Honors Director to permit students showing extraordinary talent in a particular discipline or area of study to enter the program who otherwise would not meet the admission criteria above. Students who do not meet the published admission requirements, however, will enter the program on a provisional basis for a term of one semester. To remain in the Honors Program beyond that, the student must meet or exceed all Honors Program responsibilities detailed in this Handbook.
