Flex Program

History And Purpose: The FLEX Committee was collapsed into the Professional Development Committee in Fall 2010. The combined Professional Development/FLEX Committee meets regularly during the fall and spring semesters.

FLEX Information: AWC established the FLEX Activity Program in 1990 to promote professional development opportunities for its faculty. Full-time faculty are paid for two days per year above and beyond the contractual 'duty days' of being on campus. It is expected that full-time faculty will use this time to pursue interests relevant to their discipline and/or to their own personal academic/intellectual growth so as to continue to improve as an instructor at the college-level. The hours spent in these pursuits can be used to satisfy obligatory FLEX hour requirements.

To meet the FLEX contractual requirement, full-time faculty (continuing, probationary, and one-year temporary) are required to document 15 hours of FLEX pursuits between May 1 and April 30 of the following year, a full calendar year. This obligation equates to approximately one professional development clock hour (60 minutes) for every 22 calendar days.

FLEX activities are approved by a committee of continuing, full-time faculty members from each academic division. Approved FLEX pursuits require expected outcomes that directly and positively impact the teaching/learning process and augment one's effectiveness as a faculty.

Please note that during the spring 2013 semester the FLEX Committee revised certain FLEX criteria, basically what does and what does not count as FLEX professional development. President Mayle approved the FLEX Committee recommendations August 2013. The new FLEX criteria are effective immediately.

FLEX Committee meeting dates for the spring 2014 semester are:

January 21, February 4, February 18, March 4, April 8, and April 29
