This certificate will prepare you for an entry-level position in law enforcement.
What will you learn in this program?
Before starting this program, you will first need to meet the minimum qualifications for a peace officer applicant. In the program you will then learn everything from patrol procedures to traffic control.
What kinds of classes can you look forward to in this program?
Substantive Criminal Law
In this course you will learn the philosophy of legal sanctions and the historical development of law from the common law to modern American Criminal Law, You will also learn the classifications of crimes, elements of and parties to crimes, general definitions of crimes, common defenses utilized, and included specific offenses and the essential elements of each offense.
Court Function
You will examine the structure, function, and organization of American criminal courts as well as specialized courts within the criminal justice system. Judicial procedures and the roles of legal actors including judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and court employees are studied. The rights of defendants and victims, the role of plea-bargaining, the operation of
juries, trials, and sentencing, and contemporary controversial legal issues are examined.
Community Policing
In this course, you will learn the new philosophy of community policing for the twenty-first century. This course is designed to provide the theories and practicalities of the new policing, as well as to identify the basic concepts, strategies, experiments and research on community interaction.

Taking classes full-time, you can complete this 36-credit certificate in two or three semesters.
