How to Become a Tutor

Are you interested in being a tutor? Please review our tutor qualifications.

Student Success Center (SSC) tutor qualifications:

 

ENGLISH/WRITING TUTORS:

    • Must have completed Eng 101 and Eng 102 with a grade of B or better
    • Must have overall minimum GPA of 3.0
    • Must have recommendation from instructor or proof of course completion
    • Must be able to demonstrate good written and oral communication skills

MATH TUTORS:

    • Must have completed MAT 142 or MAT 151 or higher with a grade of B or better
    • Must have overall minimum GPA of 3.0 
    • Must have recommendation from instructor or proof of course completion
    • Must be able to demonstrate good oral communication skills

 

OTHER TUTORS:

    • Must be able to demonstrate good written and oral communication skills
    •  Must have completed course to be tutored or higher with a grade of B or better
    • Must have overall minimum GPA of 3.0
    • Must have recommendation from instructor or proof of course completion

 

Arizona Western College offers a Tutor Training program which is certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).  EDU 102 is a one credit, hybrid course that consists of specific learning modules and live workshops. This training program is designed to prepare tutors for working with students and is required of all new tutors. 

To complete the application process, you must submit the Student Success Center application, a current résumé, unofficial transcripts, and faculty recommendation form or letter to the Math Center or Writing Center (SC building). If you are a current AWC student, please also file an official application for student employment online through Jobs for Matadors
