Blackboard Hardware and Software Requirements

Hardware and software requirements are necessary in order for you to access AWC blackboard version 9.1. Instructors may have other requirements for class such as a headset for courses that require you to participate in voice board or reply to a voice email.

Note:The AWC Distance Education Department in coordination with the Information Technology Department implements scheduled maintenance days for Blackboard. Please check the announcements on the blackboard login page for specific dates.

Skills

  • Use of Web browsers.
  • Entering Uniform Resource Locator's (URL's ).
  • Downloading files from the Internet.
  • Completing online forms.
  • Basic word processing skills.

Hardware Requirements

You are required to have regular, reliable access to a computer with a stable broadband Internet connection. You will need access to the Internet using High Speed Connection. We recommend a speed of 1.5 Mbps or higher, while a slower connection still works; user may have system slowness and time outs when working with blackboard. Dial-up connection is not recommended.

  • For hardware we recommend a processor of 2 GHz or faster. 20GB of free drive space and 2GB of RAM or higher. A monitor resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher.

Software Requirements

  • Java: Some features in blackboard require that you have an up to date java installed on your computer. To check if you have the latest version of Java please visit: https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
  • Although it is not required to access Blackboard, students might want to have Microsoft Office installed on their personal computers to view and access documents provided by the instructor. If you don't have Microsoft Office or don't want it on your computer, you can link to the Office Viewer utilities from our plugins page.
  • Macromedia Flash Player: Flash is required to play videos within blackboard system. You can download the latest version from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Internet Browsers:
We recommend having both IE and Firefox browsers installed on your computer. Having multiple browsers help in quick switch to a different browser when there is a browser related issue.  If you are having an issue in blackboard with a certain browser and blackboard works with another browser than you know that this is a browser or settings problem. If the problem is in multiple browsers, then you will know that the problem can be either related to blackboard or an issue with your computer.
The following is a list of browsers provided by blackboard and the status of support.
