Doug Mellon, a Yuma farmer, has been appointed to the Arizona Western College District Governing Board. He was sworn in by County Superintendent Tom Tyree on August 12, 2011. Doug Mellon fills the vacated board seat held by Alicia Valdez who served 18 years representing the south Yuma county district.

"Doug Mellon has a long and distinguished record of service while he's lived in Yuma county," stated Tyree. "He's a successful farmer who has served on many agricultural and community boards. He also has a strong background in accounting and business that will serve the college well in the budget challenges that it faces going forward."

Mellon was born and raised in Yuma and attended AWC the year it opened in 1963 before moving on to Arizona State University.

"I was there when AWC started and I think it's the time in my life to give back. While educators are an important part of a school board, he noted, it is also important to have business people on the board."

"Agriculture is a big part of our community so I'm just hoping I can bring a little better balance to the board. I'm a very firm believer in education. I think that's what's going to make our economy in Yuma move forward."
