My name is Mindy Torres and I am the Supplemental Instructor for the HSI Stem Pipeline grant. I graduated in May 2013 from Northern Arizona University with Bachelors in Biology and a minor in chemistry. My personal interests include cooking, reading and scrapbooking. I also love keeping up with current events in the science field. I have helped students with remedial mathematics (121 and 151) and English 100. I follow the syllabus closely and make lesson plans accordingly. For instance if I know my students have an exam, I prepare practice exams to ensure they are prepared for the actual graded exam. My goal for my students is to understand the material being covered in class and if they do not that they have enough confidence to ask for my help. I thoroughly enjoy working with students who are willing to learn and put in the extra effort to understand concepts covered in class. It is highly rewarding to work with students who are genuinely interested in continuing their education and I am honored to be a part of that process.
What is a "supplemental instructor?"
Supplemental instruction is a peer-assisted study session that helps to improve in a particular subject such as math or English. The supplemental instructor (SI) is someone who has successfully passed the class and is well versed in the subject. The SI attends the class so that they know what the instructor is teaching and they hold a special study session so that they can help students pass the course.
